Bellringing

Ok, we are biased, but ringing is a great activity!

There are about 5,000 towers in the world, with bells hung for the unique British style of change ringing which developed in the seventeenth century.

The 40,000 or so people in the UK who ring these bells:

  • Enjoy the exercise.
  • Keep their brains in gear thinking about, and learning, the patterns of changes we ring.
  • Have a great social life with fellow ringers.
  • Are made welcome in towers all over the country, so meet new people wherever they go.

Ringers come from all walks of life, and are mostly (but not exclusively), between the ages of 10 and 80.  To be a ringer needs no special musical ability, and you don’t have to go to church services although lots of ringers are Christians.

New ringers are always made welcome.  Contact us by filling in the form below to find out more and have a go!

The bells

At Hallow we are fortunate to have a beautiful ring of 8 bells cast in 1900 by John Taylor and Company in Loughborough. They were donated, together with the clock and spire, by Amy Mary Wheeley-Lea in memory of her husband, Charles Wheeley-Lea, son of John, of Lea and Perrins fame.
The bells were overhauled by Mears and Stainbank in 1937 and since then have been maintained by the ringers.
In bell ringing parlance, weights are expressed in cwt-qtr-lb. Thus 21-2-17 = 2430 lbs. For those not schooled in imperial weights and measures (or have forgotten) metric weights are also shown below.
